| Southeast Thurston Firefighters on scene of a working house fire. |
|
On Sunday, March 4th Engine 21 was dispatched at approximately 4 pm to a smoke investigation. On the way to the scene Engine 21 officer, Captain Pat Kruse, upgraded the smoke investigation to a structure fire. Additional units were toned; Brush 24, Tender 21, Tender 17-1, and Tender 6-1, as well as Engine 91. Medic 2, Battatlion 31, Chief 17-1 and 17-2 also were on the scene.
The fire, in an abandon house, was fully involved upon Engine 21's arrival. Responders had to first remove a makeshift barricade of the driveway which included hoses and old stumps.
Engine 21, Brush 24, and Engine 91 battled the blaze for more than 2 hours. The abadoned home had tongue and groove 2x6 studs for the wall and roof sheathing which caused the fire to burn very hot and made it stubborn to put out. Also the amount of debris in the home contributed to the fire load.
